Becoming a U.S. Citizen

Applicants for citizenship must pass an examination that contains reading and writing portions.

-	Applicants are given three chances to read and write a sentence in correct English.
-	A testing officer will dictate a sentence in English; applicants must be able to write the sentence.
-	Applicants must read aloud a sentence in English.
-	A civics exam will be administered. Applicants are required to correctly answer at least six out of ten questions chosen from a master list of 100 questions on civics and history.
