FAQs on ILL
How many books may I request?
You may have up to 10 active items at one time. This includes interlibrary loan items that are currently checked out to you as well as ones on request.

How long may I keep an ILL book?
The lending library specifies the check-out period. It usually ranges from two to four weeks.

May I renew my ILL book?
That depends on the policy of the lending library. The paper wrapper on the book should indicate if renewals are not permitted. To request a renewal, logon to ILLiad.

What materials may NOT be borrowed?
New books published within the last 6 months, books already in our collection (including reference books), rare books, most genealogy books, most dissertations and theses, audiovisual items, and entire issues of periodicals.

May I request a DVD through ILL?
No. Only books, articles and microfilm may be borrowed through ILL. We do not process requests for DVDs, videos, CDs or other audiovisual items.

May I use a 'web card' to request an ILL book?
No. You will need to come to one of our library locations to upgrade your library card to one with full privileges.

May I request items from other countries?
You may only request items from libraries within the United States.

InterLibrary Loan
Interlibrary loan (ILL) allows us to borrow books and articles for you from other libraries throughout the United States. You may have up to 10 active ILL requests on your account at one time.

  1. Find the item by searching WorldCat/First Search. Click here if you are inside the library. Click this link if you are at home or your office.
  2. Click on the title of the book you want and then on the Interlibrary Loan Request button . If "Irving Public Library" appears next to Libraries Worldwide you may not request the book through Interlibrary Loan. Search for it in the library's catalog.
  3. Logon to ILLiad with your library card number and last name.
  4. Click "Submit Request" at the bottom of the page.

  1. Logon to ILLiad.
  2. Click on Request a Photocopy.
  3. Fill in as many of the fields as you are able.
  4. Fill in the amount you are willing to pay for the photocopy in dollars and cents. Loaning libraries frequently charge for photocopies. You request will be canceled if the loaning library charges more than you are willing to pay.
  5. Click Submit Request.
  6. Please note: Photocopy items will be forwarded to your mailing address.

  1. Login to ILLiad.
  2. Click on View/Modify Outstanding Requests for a list of your current requests and their status.
  3. Click on the transaction number to edit or cancel a request.

How to renew an ILL item
Go to the ILLiad Logon Screen.

Enter your 14-digit library card number and your last name in capital letters, then click Logon to ILLiad.

Click on View/renew Checked Out Items.

Items must be renewed before the due date.
