Types of Library Cards


New library cards, include the following limits for the first 90 days:

  • Five items can be checked out at one time
  • Two of those five can be DVDs
Customers with no overdue items or charges on their account for 90 days can request an upgrade to a Full Privilege card.


Once upgraded to full privileges, the checkout limit increases to 50 items, with the following limits:

  • Five DVDs
  • Five Digital Downloads
  • 10 Magazines
  • Two Bluebonnet Award Books
  • Two Book Buddies
  • Two Stories-to-Go kits
  • Two Book-Gab-to-Go Kits (for registered Book Clubs)


Children under the age of 16 may obtain a card upon application by a parent, grandparent or legal guardian. Anyone aged 16 or 17 who cannot provide the documentation required for an adult card may obtain a card upon application by a parent, grandparent or legal guardian.

The parent, grandparent or legal guardian must have a card in good standing (no overdue items or outstanding bills) or the parent, grandparent or legal guardian must obtain a card.

Parent, grandparent or legal guardian and child must visit a library together to obtain a youth card. The parent, grandparent or legal guardian must complete the Application for Library Card for Member Under 16 Years of Age.

The parent, grandparent or legal guardian will receive a copy of the application. Youth cards are linked to the card of the parent, grandparent or legal guardian. All notices will be delivered to the parent, grandparent or legal guardian. The parent, grandparent or legal guardian is responsible for all items checked out on the child’s card. Privileges granted by the Youth Card are identical to those of an Adult Card. The Youth Card will expire in 90 days. At that time, if there are no overdue items and no bills on the account for the previous 90 days, the youth, parent, grandparent or legal guardian may request that the card be upgraded to a full-privilege card that allows checking out of as many as 50 items at one time.

A child with a school ID, Texas ID or driver’s license, whose parent, grandparent or legal guardian does not have a card in good standing may obtain a Computer Use Only card.

Special Library Cards


You must have a card to sign onto the computers. Computer Use Only cards have no checkout privileges.

To obtain a Computer Use Only card you will need a photo ID. With proper documentation, and Computer Use Only cardholder, may obtain a New Library Card.

The first Computer Use Only card is free; replacement cards are $2.


The Irving Public Library makes available a Homebound Card for those who are unable to come to a library as a result of physical impairment. A relative or friend may take the Application for Library Card for Homebound Customer to the person who is unable to come to the library. Once the application is completed, it must be returned it to a library with a letter from a physician, social worker or the residence administrator confirming the name and address of the applicant and stating that the applicant is unable to visit a library due to a physical impairment. The Homebound library card and PIN information will be mailed to the customer.


Corporations and businesses in the City of Irving are eligible to apply for a Corporate Card from the Irving Public Library. This enables representatives from the company or business to borrow library materials from the Irving Public Library on behalf of the company.

To apply for a Corporate Card, a request must be made on company letterhead and mailed or faxed to the Irving Public Library along with the completed application.

Limited Use Library Cards


The Irving Public Library will issue you a card valid at other TexShare libraries for six months from the date of issue. When borrowing an item from one of these libraries, you will be required to present your TexShare card and a valid photo ID such as a driver’s license or state-issued ID card. The lending library may have additional conditions or restrictions for TexShare borrowers, so check their policies prior to visiting.

Failure to return materials borrowed with a TexShare card and/or pay any charges imposed by a TexShare library may result in suspension of your borrowing privileges at the Irving Public Library and/or your account being turned over the library’s collection agency.
